2.6.8 through 2.6.16 (in the bug)
alsa 1.0.11-2
Debian etch

No, that's already in etch.

/proc/asound looks pretty much normal, indicates the snd-ali5451 module.
I can send a tarball if that would help.
alsamixer shows MM for 3D Contr, Mic Boos, IEC958, Caller I, External,
and Off-hook (?).  Turning off MM...  Oh my gosh, turning it off on
External makes the sound work again!

Was more like very frustrated! :-(  I kept trying new kernels hoping
"this will be the one"...
