Well, I just have loaded GNOME [0] and have set all audio setings in
System/settings/audio to alsa. BMP, XMMS, MOC and others are working
properly ;) Systemsounds via esound are crying which AFAIK should be
the only reason to use GrandPa ESD ;)

[0] xfce4 and wmii are, not forever but still, my favourits.
