udev should do the stuff. You don't need to configure alsa ;)

Lenny is Debian's stable release. We can't put packages updated by
upstream to Lenny. Only security fixes are distributed. alsa
packages ar not backported. It would would cause too many upgrades.
The same as you would switch to squeeze, though. If you have probs
to get sound on your machine let me know. I'll try to help.
