Hi Elimar, and thanks a lot for your prompt response !

> I am running snd-hda-itel on a tp t61p.

Here it's a Dell Latitude E5400.

> What the hell is an ugly beep?

Attached is an MP3 file containing the recording of a series of noises produced
by console bells obtained by pressing the backspace key at the
shell prompt.

> For me it is just a beep....

Here it's not even a beep, just a very strange and disturbing noise, as
you will hear.

> Well the beep can be controlled by the Beep mixer control.

But that does not work very well, see below.

> What tells
> # amixer | grep -A4 Beep

Simple mixer control 'PC Beep',0
Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined penum
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 3
  Mono: Playback 1 [33%] [-12.00dB] [on]

When the Beep control varies from 1 to 3, this does not seem to have a
sensible effect on the volume of the beep one can hear. Moreover, even
when the control is set to zero, one can hear the beep. It's less loud
but still there. To me this is not the main problem so I'm reporting
this just for the sake of completeness...

What I'm saying is that what I can hear does for sure _not_ correspond
to what has been implemented or what should be heard.

Are you talking about pcspkr here ?

If you are talking about this module it is enabled on my system, i.e.not
blacklisted.

Thanks again for your help,
Shérab.
