After having a bit more time to think about this: I think we should try to 
get the current state into Sid and then Testing before merging the rather 
intrusive fixuser branch. It is better to have some small iterative steps 
instead of trying to land one big change.

Also the freeze looms on the horizon, it would be unfortunate to miss the 
deadline because we intertwined us into a maze of conflicting changes.
