I was somewhat overambitious and have retrieved the latest upstream sources 
before attempting to rebuild anything. The current version in Debian is from 
2006 and in the meantime  upstream has changed their handling of the libjpeg 
in their sources. Patch 003 is not applicable any more. Neither is 001. 2 and 
4 seem to work, still. I tried to fiddle around with the source to get it 
going ... but in vain.
