I cannot say, why not all files have been installed - it looks like they
have should been (although man-db should not have crashed of course).

The error then comes when you've tried to remove the package and the
init script exits with the error "BOINC data directory '/var/lib/boinc-
client' does not exist.".

I think this should not cause an error, at least during package removal.
AFAIK other packages' init scripts would just silently exit if the
binary or other prerequisites are not available (anymore).

You can fix this for your case by emptying the pre-removal script like this:
    sudo echo -n > /var/lib/dpkg/info/boinc-client.prerm
and then remove the package again.

Please try re-installing it then, maybe this was caused initially by
some hardware failure?!

** Summary changed:

- package boinc-client 6.10.17 dfsg-3ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 6
+ Pre-removal script should not abort with missing boinc data directory (exit status 6)

** Changed in: boinc (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Triaged

** Changed in: boinc (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Low
