I admit I'm too young in this list to know about history...

AFAIK I never had problems with cuda and nvidia.

I used nvidia current, nvidia current updates (which ship libcuda1 I think), so I crunch cuda workunits with no problems at all.

Nowadays I use the official Nvidia driver and I manually update it when a new release comes out.

I saw something about libcuda1 commented in debian/control file, so I'm pretty sure somebody has already took care of this problem.
(I'm wrining from my phone but I think I remember something like "uncomment this when libcuda hits unstable" or something like this)

So just one question:
Do you want a libcuda package to be installed as external dependency in order to crunch wu without all the nvidia package? Is this what you want?

I see so many bugs on launchpad asking "please provide libcuda1 as a separate package".

If this is really what you want I think you have to follow up on the launchpad bug 050963.
