By "version included", do you mean the SONAME?  

The "--layout system" behaviour was allegedly designed in concert with
the Redhat packager.  Maybe we can work with Redhat, upstream and
other interested packagers to define a more sensible behaviour --
keeping at least the SOVERSION in the filename, for example -- which
could then become common practice for linux packagers (and likely any
unix packager).
