[pkg-cinnamon] Bug#766819: cinnamon freezes for a minute or so, when opening images or text with gnome/gtk apps and when closing them later on

Hi.

This happened already with 2.2.16-3 since a day or two (don't remember when
it started exactly the first time) and continues with -4.

Cinnamon freezes for something between 30 seconds and a minute every time
I open some text file with gedit or an image or svg with eog or inkscape.

And for the same time when closing that window later on (but interestingly
not when I Ctrl-C the respective process, e.g. eog.).

It also seems that sometime it's a two step freeze, so after some time of
waiting, e.g. eog shows's up already with some image rendered, but one
sees that the fonts in the menu of eog don't fit, as if they would be from
a image that would be zoomed. Waiting some more 20 secs, and one sees the
window growing a bit and the fonts drawn correctly.

During that the system freezes, well at least cinnamon,.. clock applet, etc.
everything dead.
But one can move the mouse and one can switch to the console (Ctrl-Alt-F*).
Working there works, so one might conclude that other processes are not
affected, yet I'm not totally sure about this, since it looked a few times
as if log messages to syslog/journalctl are delayed during the freeze.

The freeze is 100% reproducible for me, e.g. always when I open such image
with eog, or inkscape, or open text with gedit.
I get the freeze.

It does not happen, when I open the same files with display(1) or vi.

There is no logging from kernel or syslog which seems to be related in any
way, the only thing at all would be:

but these do not correlate with the freeze (or directly after) and also
appear without any freeze.

The laptop where this happens is quite powerfull, 8 core, 16GB RAM, SSD...
so I doubt it's a hardware performance issue.
Neither do I see any processes in uninterruptible sleep (D) or running (R)
during the freeze (I quickly change to the console and to ps ax).

Since it happened before I've updated cinnamon to -3, it's possibly not
even cinnamon's fault,... just don't know where to start else.

Attached is my aptitude log from the last days,... but nothing seems
to be really related at a first glance.

Any ideas?
