Did you disable busybox in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf? busybox
provides basename, so if you enable it again in initramfs, this error
should disappear.

Nevertheless I'm happy to remove yet another dependency on a binary from
the initramfs script, so I applied your patch.
