CUPS

Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.23-12
This report is for the version of cupsys currently installed by
etch.
The version installed by sarge does not exhibit the bugs reported
here.
Attempting to add or modify an H-P 5100 printer using the GUI config
tool does not display any H-P 5100 driver. Only the Gutenprint drivers are
displayed, even though the foomatic-filters-ppds package installed
automatically with cupsys, and the foomatic ppds are in their proper place
in the file tree. In fact, the GUI configuration tool does not search the
/usr/share/ppd tree at all.
This is a much more severe bug than 358186, because Gutenprint supports
only a small fraction of the HP printers that foomatic and hplip do.
However, bug 358186 is still present in addition to this new one; the
required symlink is not provided.
I worked around the problem by copying foomatic's H-P 5100 ppd.gz file to
/etc/cups/ppd, unzipping it, and symlinking it to lp.ppd (renaming the
original lp.ppd). I was then able to configure the printer using the GUI
config tool, specify which trays were present, and set tray selection to
"auto". With that done, a command of the form:
lp -o media=Middle /etc/network/interfaces
pulled paper from Tray 2, as it was supposed to.
However, the tray names were different from the ppd file supplied
with Sarge. The more intuitive
lp -o media=Tray2 /etc/network/interfaces
worked under Sarge; these tray names are not defined in the new ppd file.
Unnecessary changes are a nuisance.
