[Pkg-cups-devel] Bug#375254: Etch cupsys upgrade: web interface does not list HPLIP drivers

Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.1-2

After the upgrade, opened http://localhost:631/admin and checked
printers. Had trouble with printing test page. ( See bug # 373793) When
I tried to 'add printer' the steps did not include the Make/Manufacturer
page, instead went to the Model/Driver page . This didn't list the
correct driver for my printer, HP Business Inkjet 1000. I had to click
'browse' and find it, actually using the link, hplip, already in
/usr/share/cups/model. If I used the 'modify printer' option then the
correct pages and drivers were displayed. I installed the
cups-driver-gutenprint package , those drivers were picked up cups and
displayed, however that package does not contain the correct driver for
my printer. I have the hplip and hpijs packages installed (0.9.7-4 and
2.1.7+0.9.7-4). Everything worked correctly before upgrade. I decided to
try removing the link to 'cups-included' and the other .ppd files in the
/usr/share/cups/model directory and then the Make/Manufacturer page was
displayed, with of course only hplip and raw as options. So apparently
cups is recognizing my printer as a HP and just giving me the
cups-included drivers, or gutenprint ones if installed, and ignoring the
link, hplip, to the correct driver. It didn't do that before the
upgrade. I just bought the printer a few months ago and had no problem
installing it then. So I found a work around, but it is not right. I
only have one physical printer, but have 3 installed, regular printing,
grayscale and high quality, easier than opening the web interface and
adjusting the printer settings, just choose the desired one from the
menu. Cups should not skip the Make/Manufacturer page, which would give
a HP user the HP and the HP (HPLIP) options, along with all the other
makes. Cups is either lazy or trying to be too smart, but messes up.

Pkgs installed: cupsys, cups-bsd, cups-client, libcupsys2, foomatic-db,
foomatic-db-engine, foomatic-db-hpijs, foomatic-filters, hplip, hpijs,
hplip-ppds, openoffice.org, plus several others.
