[Pkg-cups-devel] CUPS / libinklevel incompatibilities

Hello,

since CUPS 1.4.x packages have made it into Debian unstable it is now
necessary to point out a problem which has occured:

- The usblp kernel module has been blacklisted because it is no more
necessary for the operation of CUPS. This module being loaded might
even disturb or stop the operation of CUPS when compiled with
--enable-libusb.

- Definitely libinklevel which is developed by me and as far as I know
some other printer tools like escputil from the gutenprint project and
mtink depend on the presence of a printer device node which is only
available when the usblp kernel module is loaded. So these tools will
become useless for Debian users if the CUPS package in the next release
will be configured as it is now in unstable.

- For libinklevel I can say that a reimplementation which works without
the usblp kernel module won't be done in the near future.

So what I ask you is to consider building the CUPS package with the
option --enable-libusb=no. This would ensure that the aformentioned
tools can be used in future debian versions.

Best regards

Markus Heinz

libinklevel developer
