Subject: cups: prints garbage with HP2055 after upgrading to 1.4.x
Package: cups
Version: 1.4.1-1
Severity: normal
*** Please type your report below this line ***
I have a HP Laserjet 2055d printer connected to this box. Ever since
upgrading to the new major version, printing has been practically
impossible.
Every document sent to the printer ends up producing pure garbage, which
looks something like this: http://bostik.iki.fi/cups/garbage.jpg
Usually a document that should produce a single page generates one page
like in the link above and then another with just minor crud at the top
and the rest of page blank. This problem applies to ALL documents I have
tried to print.
* raw text
* cups test page from admin web-GUI
* anything with a2ps
* images
* web pages, printed from firefox
* PDF documents
The only thing that works is the printer's own self-test page. Selecting
that from admin menu produces a clean printout.
The steps I have taken so far:
* reinstalled printer from scratch
* that solved usb-backend vs. usblp issue
* deleted and re-added printer, multiple times
* tried with the following drivers:
- hpijs pcl3 3.9.4b
- hpcups pcl3 3.9.4b
* tried to toggle raw printing, no effect
The printer worked perfectly with cups 1.3.x, and because the built-in
test page produces a proper printout, I don't think this is a case of
broken hardware.
Occasionally, after re-adding a printer and using the hpijs driver I get
the cups test page properly out. Most of the time I still get a garbage
sheet. Any actual jobs submitted produce nothing but garbage.

In addition, the PPD file that gets generated insists that the printer
supports colour printing. Manually changing the configuration to
grayscale does not help, so it can't be the cause. I don't know what to
try any more, but I really would like to get this printer working
properly again. Any information you need, I will provide. Any tests you
want me to do, I will try out.
