[Pkg-cups-devel] Bug#630556: cups: HP Laserjet 2430 printer fails to print via USB after deprecating usblp support

Package: cups
Version: 1.4.6-8
Severity: normal

After the usblp module was blacklisted and Cups switched to its new USB handler,
as of 1.4.6-8, I started experiencing problems printing to my HP LaserJet 2430
printer via the USB port, as follows.

No errors were reported in syslog or /var/log/cups/error_log

The data light on the printer flashed for a while, and then remained steady
and the printer then failed to respond to keys pressed on its panel.

The status of Cups showed that the job had been sent, but of course nothing
was printed.

Subsequent jobs could not be transferred to the printer.

The only error messages I managed to get out of it, after several attempts,
were:

Jun 15 16:01:57 jdc kernel: [26582.320139] usb 1-7: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL
failed cmd usb rqt 161 rq 0 len 1024 ret -110
Jun 15 16:02:07 jdc kernel: [26592.360136] usb 1-7: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL
failed cmd usb rqt 161 rq 0 len 1024 ret -110
Jun 15 16:02:17 jdc kernel: [26602.400123] usb 1-7: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL
failed cmd usb rqt 161 rq 0 len 1024 ret -110
Jun 15 16:02:27 jdc kernel: [26612.440117] usb 1-7: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL
failed cmd usb rqt 161 rq 0 len 1024 ret -110

Most of the time, though, there were no errors reported in the log at all.

Last time cups moved to usbfs and usblp was blacklisted, I remember reporting
similar issues, so it seems that the problem with the new usbfs code hasn't
been fixed.

I'm willing to test future versions but I don't have the time/expertise to
help debug the USB code.
