Hmm, currently, with the modified upstream tarball, two consecutive runs
of "dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us -tc" _do_ provide the same diff.gz file.

So I would vote for (2) for now and 4a in the long term.

I know. But dpkg-buildpackage definately is faster than running pbuilder
or svn-buildpackage, which makes it a better option during development
in my opinion. I do run the build inside a pbuilder environment before
upload though.
