$ xrandr --size 2304x1280 --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024 --pos 0x256 \
 --output DVI-0 --mode 1280x1024 --right-of VGA-0 --rotate left

should be close. I use static configuration (via xorg.conf), so the exact
incantation could be off. To be sure: my screen estate is L-shaped, with the
vertical display to the right and the displays lined up at the bottom.

Yeah, I know. Problem is that I've yet to encounter the first app that still
speaks dbus *after* it has crashed. As it stands now, there is no satisfactory
solution for when e17 crashes at startup, short of nuking and rebuilding. And
with the heavy customization that E17 allows for, that's a lot of work.

I simply hadn't noticed e17 in unstable before, simply because I had it pinned
at p.e.o and apt doesn't yet have a --do-what-i-mean option.
