Just using this engine doesn't give me the ability to reproduce. (I also

Btw.. I doubt the strace debug stuff will catch the issue. I was tempted
to get you to run gdb and break on setlocale, but having just tried it
myself, there are an untold number of calls to that function from within
glib - so it won't be an easy job to trace for the ones causing problems
(if indeed it is an errant setlocale call).

Would it be possible for you to attempt commenting some of these changes
out.. I can't see how they might cause it, but "something" must be
having an effect. The font is the most likely I'd guess - if it forces
glib to fiddle with some encodings.

I don't have the font, so I can't really test changing that here.
