I'm often working behind a Draconian firewall which forbids pinging in
general. Evolution likes to ping the imap server once in a while, and
when the ping does not go through, anything else can't be done over the
net, either, like sending and checking for new messages, while the
pinging seems to be blocking some kind of a queue or something. A
solution to this is to stay offline, and only go online when you want
to
check mail or send some. This is a nuisance, especially since:
Evolution tries to ping the imap sever even when working offline, and
then it gives an error by itself explaining:
"Error pinging imap-server imap.vvv.yy. You have to be online to
perform
this operation." (Or something like that, I'm using the Finnish
language settings)
Which is stupid since I'm not pinging anyone.
A suggestion for a solution: do not use ping.
This phenomenon has persisted at least from 2.2.
