The Debian packages have had real-* for _much_ longer than that.

I suspect that Debian introduced the real-* stuff way before Philip
wrote that.

No, that implication is definetely wrong, the real-* stuff was already
handled by exim 3.12 back in 2002 (which is the oldest exim package I
could get hold of), while we introduced the syntax error handler in
userforward somewhere in the 4.x era.

Anyway, both lists don't have much traffic so it doesn't hurt to be
subscribed. You are a very active user of the packages, so I think
that you should be there.
