Ok, I now have a totally fresh install and config of exim4 - here's
'dpkg -s exim4*':

> ii  exim4-config        4.63-13             configuration for the exim MTA (v4)

> ii  exim4-daemon-light  4.63-13             lightweight exim MTA (v4) daemon

I also purged and rebuilt the config files, including passwd.client.
I'll report back any problems or apparent lack thereof.
