Marc & others,

mh> TCP/465 is roguely used by all Microsoft clients ...
mh> otoh, everybody expects TCP/587 to be e-mail submission via (plain)
SMTP with or without STARTTLS. Using SMTP-over-TLS with TLS on connect
will be a surprise to people who know what they're doing.

I've seen various reasons for using and for
not using ports 465, 587, 1025 & etc. I am
the only person using exim on peasthope.yi.org
= joule.cablelan.net. SSL-on-connect is
necessary for the MUA. I am happy to use any
port number which works. Please recommend a
port number.

mh> In which file?

/etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template

mh> Are you using split or non-split config?

non-split

mh> What's the error message of the client, ...

As mentioned in a message to exim-users at exim.org
in mid March, System.Log shows only this.
--- SMTP

mh> ... what are the log entries on the server?

When I arrive at the remote location tomorrow
(April 24) will try another message and see
whether anything is reported in /var/log/syslog
or /var/log/exim4/{mainlog, rejectlog}.
Hopefully one of the three gets something
pertinent.

Thanks, ... Peter
