Not sure what you're looking for with aliases. Could you please expand on that? 

[holtzm at localhost]~$ exim4 -bt root
R: smarthost for root at cox.net
root at cox.net
  router = smarthost, transport = remote_smtp_smarthost
  host smtp.west.cox.net [68.6.19.4]

That shows the problem but I have no clue how it got that way, what file
defines it, or how to change it.  

I looked at the autogenerated file but saw no sign of root at cox.net and
the /etc/exim4/conf.d/* might as well be written in Aramaic (I'm no
programmer).

Any further pointers *greatly* appreciated.
