It is definitely possible to specify both with and without extension.
One problem that might happen is if you have multiple images with the
same basename, e.g. something.nii, something.nii.gz,
something.hdr/something.img, ...

Yes, please.

And please also include version information for nifticlib, pynifti and
pymvpa.
