I checked and I think the problem is not when you stop the atieventsd,
but when you (re)start it while a user is logged in.
In this case /tmt/.gdm* starts belonging to root, and only root can
start programs in the X session.
The problem seems to be that xauth is called by root while the user is
already logged; i tried to implement a workaround by making the script
call xauth with the Xsession owner UID when it's needed.
Now it seems to work quite flawlessly for me, I can log in and out,
restart atieventsd and continue using X normally.

I agree on the idea of a different package for atieventsd, or at least
it shouldn't be started by default in the init scripts; anyway, it's
pretty unusable for me without authatieventsd.sh, because I just don't
have the possibility to log out from X...

The patch is against the original ati script and contains both the
fixes posted on the ubuntu BTS (to detect the right xauth file) and
mine (not to mess up xauth if a user is already logged)
