Thanks anyway. I tried the SID version, including upgrading xorg, and 
things didn't work out very well. Had some trouble getting back to 
Squeeze, but finally got my desktop back.

I'm back to the ATI drivers using their installer but will probably 
switch back to vesa again. ATI leaves some stuff in the session startup 
that killed my desktop session right after the gdm login, so I had to 
reinstall their driver to get back to my desktop.
