[pkg-firebird-general] libfbclient2 shouldn't be renamed libfbclient2.1?

No, no. This certainly is something you *don't* want. See Policy §8.1.

The library packages name follow the soname of the library. The soname
is libfbclient.so.2 even for firebird 2.1.

[I've been told that the 2.1 libfbclient is 100% backwards compatible
(ABI) with the 2.0 version so there is actually no need to have both.
This is the reason why the soname stayed the same. The 2.1 version
should just work the same as the 2.0 version.]

Right, the 2.0 source package should not create libfbclient2 anymore.
libfbclient2 is a binary package coming from firebird2.1 source (at
least in Ubuntu, where there is firebird2.1).
