Back then I asked him about a more free license for the fonts, but he
really wanted to prevent people from selling rebranded version of his
fonts or so. I don't remember all the details.
But he also seems to have lost most interest in his free fonts, but
instead was focusing on selling newer fonts. I guess he might not want
to even bother with relicensing them.

It might of course be worth contacting him again about the OFL (but
that should be done by someone who knows details about the OFL). It
might also be worth checking if he has released additional free fonts
in the meantime.
