I was able to reproduce the problem using pango-viev:

$ echo "21-1" > test.txt && pango-view --font="DejaVu Sans Oblique 11" -o test.png test.txt 

I've also tried to play with the "--hinting" option which can be set to "none / auto / full"
and noticed that when setting "--hinting=none" the problem does not reproduce; otherwhise
the dash character is invisible.

One more thing: in gedit the problem reproduces with size 10 and 11, with pango-view only at
size 11
