Indeed, the nicest solution to this is to remove the files from there
(they will be in the revision system, after all) and put a single file
named something like THIS_MOVED_TO_A_GIT_REPOSITORY or something along
those lines.

Oh, Christian, while cloning the repository, you need to use the pesky
.git at the end of the repo name, so that you can push from it (this
is actually not true---it's just a convention, since what matters is
that the *directory* to which you're pushing to has to exist on the
remote server).

Some git servers (e.g., github) are a bit lenient regarding the lack
(or presence) of the git suffix.
