Thanks, Yves-Alexis, I can confirm that your dejavu path change fixes 
the problem. For a deployed system, the change is only your first three 
changed lines, as in the attached path. If I make this change, then

update-initramfs -u -k 3.8-1-amd6

on reboot the passphrase screen text is restored.
