Answer to myself: Maybe this is because vte is a terminal emulator
(library) and strictly expects a monospaced font for its text
rendering, which usually do not contain ligatures (more or less even by
definition, that is).

Yes, they do. Please see the attached screenshot. This has been taken
with the font version 1.200 in OTF format as downloaded from the github
page and gedit 3.20.2-2.

@Rodolphe: Could you please file an upstream bug against the vte
package over at bugs.gnome.org and request them to add ligatures
support, e.g. like the ones provided by Firacode?
