The upstream has said he's not going to make a release anytime soon, despite
4.5 years and over 1000 commits of unreleased work:

As this bug prevents other fonts from supplying non-broken glyphs in this
range, and freefont is installed by default on most Debian GUI installs,
let's fix this for stretch.

Thus, here's a patch.
