I'd like to see everything new using fontconfig. Some things (like TeX) will require massively invasive changes before that ever happens (likewise, fontconfig will probably never deal with metafont, etc font formats)
</blockquote></div><br>.. and of course the recent port of xetex to linux (texlive-xetex debian package) does in fact use fontconfig to find fonts and claims a zero-configuration font installation experience (only reads truetype and opentype font formats).
