that would be ideal strategy but there are complications:

1. pedantic me started the fork with cleaning up the code (uniform
indentation etc)

2. some decisions made by paul tt are not in favor of primary developer
in our fork (Dylan).

3. there is no quantized history of changes (ie separate commits) for
neither of forks before I initiated git repository (some time In Feb)
and just unrolled tarballs from Dylan and Paul into separate branches.
So cherry picking of early changes is not viable

to summarize, merging both branches require quite a bit of work,
probably feature-by-feature base, and I lack that time now... may
be later

sponsorship is not required indeed (at least for Debian main ;))
