it has been said, that there's not miuch left for users to change -- it  
simply will break the system.
thus, any changes are rather unlikely and it's up to the user to preserve  
any s/he might have done -- upon upgrade the files could simply be  
overwritten.
in fact, if there's really nothing left to change at all, why not put the  
configfiles in /usr/[lib|share]/... instead?

not sure, what you mean, but shouldn't the device detection work  
nevertheless?
