Well, there is already limited support since dpkg 1.13.12:

"* Add support for architecture wildcards, but for now they will only be
   exposed in debian/control files, not in binary nor source packages.
   Closes: #291939"

The line will be "Build-Depends: libasound2-dev [linux-any]"

For short term, it's usage have two drawback

- this is not supported in sarge dpkg => backports would not be possible
- build-essential depends only on dpkg-dev (>= 1.13.5)

Both drawbacks will gone after release of etch.
