I've just downloaded what seems to be the latest release from the OpenAL
website[0]. According to that tarball, the latest release is version 0.0.8.
Do you know where the difference is between the current version in Debian and
this 0.0.8 version from the OpenAL website?

The 0.0.8 release also uses libtool to build the library. So that problem
would go away.

I couldn't find a reference to the SVN snapshot you were talking about. Where
did you find it? Wouldn't it otherwise make sense to include the 0.0.8
version?
