i agree, that there are users, used to the key shortcuts of former
commercial games by id Software Inc.. but even id Software Inc. switched
to shift+esc since they were faced with the fact, that the prior chosen
key to open the in-game console wasn't available and/or consistent among
all available keyboard layouts.

so i'd say, having shift+esc as a reliable and, among any keyboard
layout, consistent default setting is the better choice. also keep in
mind, that someone, who never came in touch with a game based on one of
the older id Software Inc. engines, will not know the "old" key, but
will get confused when there are all possible keys for any keyboard
layout listed in the documentation.

for nexuiz it has always been shift+esc, which also applies to all
ioQuake3-engine based games, like OpenArena, Termulous and so on.
