I sort of assumed alternatives served as a system wide chooser for my
applications. I guess this qualifies as my "daily newly learned item".

Nevertheless,
  JAVA_FLAVOR=sun6 freecol
seems to be unaffected by the capital "i"s. I did not test the cacao one.
