we were discussing this very topic this week and came to the same
conclusion ( multi tarball via debsrc 3.0) no work has started yet AFAIK
though

IMHO the best for you would be to ask to join the
http://alioth.debian.org/projects/pkg-games/

this would allow all of us to commit to the same (git sorry) repository.
