Jonathan,
	Your comment about ulimit was actually pretty helpful. There were some
pretty harsh limits in /etc/security/limits.conf which I have commented
out. Now it appears to be working. So in future you might try "ulimit
-a" as investigative tool for these issues. I'll let you know if I have
any more problems, but if not please close this ticket.
