I am not sure about the best way to proceed.

OGRE 1.9 RC1 is out, if you are not in a hurry with this package
perhaps we can wait a little to see if they release it in the next few
weeks?

If packages support it, I don't see a reason to continue with 1.8 for
much longer, I don't think that upstream are going to give any
attention after 1.9 release.
