The folks I was discussing this issue with apparently used it with the
DejaVu fonts for years without issues so perhaps upstream's concerns are
slightly overinflated?
Looking at the available screenshots I can't see how fonts like DejaVu
could break layout/rendering.

How about dropping them to recommends, so that most people will get the
default chosen fonts and people who prefer other fonts can use those?
