If you have branches that are not ready for merge, I would prefer you to
use a personal repository, either on Alioth (~/public_git/whatever.git,
e.g. http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/users/smcv/dbus.git/ is one of mine)
or off-site (Github or whatever).

IMO the fact that we would need to do manual repo surgery (or ask a
sysadmin) indicates that this is not desirable.

gnome.org git has a nice convention where branches matching wip/* can be
force-pushed and deleted by any committer, with users encouraged to use
wip/smcv/* or something. I don't know whether Alioth has anything similar.
