Bug#839169: MAME 0.177-1 unusably slow & unresponsive

Package: mame
Version: 0.177-1

Hardware: Dell i3050

Running mame on Jessie was working flawlessly. However after updating this
machine to Sid, and was not able to get mame to run acceptably. It takes
several seconds to load when supplying a rom directly, and does not respond
to any keyboard input. When running mame by itself with just the rompath
to access the menu, the mouse does move, however the cursor moves about 1
frame every 6 seconds, and the keyboard is still not working.

I have verified that this is not a problem with Xorg or the kernel updates
as I was successfully able to run the Jessie package of mame & mess on this
updated system correctly without these flaws.

I am still investigating the issue by attempting to compile the original
mame 0.177 source directly without any Debian specific changes to verify
that this is indeed a Debian build related issue and not an upstream
issue. I am also attempting to rebuild the Jessie package of mame to
ensure that there has not been a toolchain issue introduced.

I understand that later versions of mame may be slightly slower, and I have
also updated the previous configurations, and verified video drivers,
multiple cpu support, etc, but the performance of this package currently
borders on broken for this specific system.
