Do you have an ATI graphics card? If so, you may need to get the
proprietary drivers as suggested in the neverball forums (
http://www.nevercorner.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1807 ). I have the
same problem with the open-source drivers for my card (ATI Mobility
FireGL V3200) and I haven't tried the suggested fix yet.

Status in “neverball” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

Bug description:
Binary package hint: neverball

Neverball plays well enough up until level 5 of Easy (I have not tried the other levels). During level 5, usually when enough coins have been acquired, the entire system becomes unresponsive and must be shut off completely by hard reset or hard poweroff. This happens every time the level is accessed.

Ubuntu version: 9.04 kernel 2.6.28-15-generic
Neverball version: 1.5.0-1ubuntu1
What should happen: the level plays as normal.
What happened instead: complete lack of response shortly after enough coins are collected.
