this is how mostly other upstream project handle such things.

There is mostly a security-fixes related branch for fixes that are
backported from the current main development and also mostly there is
also a branch for such important not only security related changes like
this one we talking about here.

I can really suggest to work this way, makes it for all parties more
easy to work on the stuff.
