It is. Look at the "Edit" menu.

Furthermore,, "F2" is pretty much a standard hotkey for such
purposes. Thinking of Excel/Gnumeric/OOo Calc's hotkey to edit single
cells. Windoze explorer afaik also supports F2 renaming

Uh-huh. Clicking _opens_ a file. I really hate those UIs that support
Click-hold-down-rename. 

A horrid example is the Java Swing file selector: I double-click a
directory, but as a result it is not opened but instead highlighted
for renaming. Consequently, the only way to navigate directory
hierarchies in Java Swing is "Click-Enter-Click-Enter..." That sucks,
sucks, suck!

Yes, it *is* possible. I just did it with nautilus 2.4.1.

Neither am I a DD. But I wouldn't seriously expect Debian developers
to make extensive modifications to GNOME's UI design. Debian is about
packaging the software. Basic design concepts should be discussed with
upstream instead.
